According to an IT association, the internet network has been 40 percent slower than normal since July, while documents, photos and voice notes on WhatsApp, used by millions of people, have been disrupted.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has overruled the registrar’s office’s objections to a petition challenging the installation of a firewall and slowness of internet services. The court has scheduled a hearing of the application on Tuesday.

Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Amir Farooq heard the application. During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer Iman Mazari argued that the objections raised by the Registrar’s Office are unjustified.

The petition requested the court to stop the installation of the firewall, arguing that it violated the fundamental rights of citizens. It further requests that the installation of the firewall be subject to consultation with all stakeholders and subject to the protection of fundamental rights.

The petition also demanded that access to the Internet be recognized as a fundamental human right under the Constitution, as it is essential for livelihood.

Justice Farooq remarked that three objections would be taken into judicial consideration, the fourth objection related to the alleged use of inappropriate language in the petition.

The lawyer clarified that the petition contained only one tweet that did not contain any inappropriate language. After this explanation, the court removed the objections and directed to hear the case the next day.
