UN Working Group Demands Imran Khan’s Release: ‘It’s Pakistan’s Internal Matter’, Pak Law Minister’s Reaction

The United Nations Working Group had adopted this opinion in its 99th session from March 18 to 27 this year, but its written report was released on Monday.

The working group says that in their view, Imran Khan was arrested and detained without any legal justification in Cipher and the first Tosha Khana case and cases were filed against him.

According to the working group, it appears that these cases were politically motivated to keep the former prime minister and his party out of the election cycle.

The UN working group further says that there is no legal basis for the punishment of Imran Khan in the cipher case.

“Apparently, it does not seem that his (PTI’s Ex. Chairman Imran Khan’s) actions violated the Official Secrets Act.”

It may be recalled that in the charge sheet filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the cipher case, it was alleged that the former prime minister had sent diplomatic notes sent by Asad Majeed, the then-Pakistani diplomat posted in the US in 2022. Breached the Official Secrets Act by disclosing the contents of the post.

The working group further says that after the petition was filed, they sought an explanation from the government of Pakistan about these allegations, but no response was given by Pakistan.

Federal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazir Tarar, while reacting to the report of the United Nations Working Group, has said that the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the pending cases are “Pakistan’s internal matter.”

He said that as an independent state in Pakistan, the constitution and prevailing laws are implemented through the courts. PTI’s Founder Chairman Imran Khan has all the rights according to the country’s constitution and law and international norms, he is in jail as a convicted prisoner.

In a statement, he further said that ‘Imran Khan getting relief in many cases is a manifestation of transparent and fair trial and judicial system. Any demand beyond the constitution, law and international norms will be considered discriminatory, biased, and unfair.

Imran Khan’s arrest is no longer an internal matter of Pakistan.

In a statement on X, he said that after months of hard work, the UN working group has given its opinion which shows that Imran Khan’s detention is illegal and he should be released immediately.
