The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday forecast heavy monsoon rains across Sindh in the next 72 hours, warning that the bad weather could lead to floods in some districts of the province.
“A series of strong Monsoon winds are affecting the North-Central and East and North-East regions of Balochistan”, the advisory issued said today.
Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Kishor, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qamber, Shahdadkot, Nowshera Dafiroz, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, Umarkot, Sanghar, Jamshwar and Dadu are forecasted with intermittent thundershowers. The advisory predicts that the weather pattern will continue till August 19.
The department also said that the districts of Tharparkar, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Mayari, Tand and Muhammad Khan, Kund, Ameyar, Sajawal, and Andhi are likely to receive heavy rain and thundershowers till August 19.
A total of 49 mm of rain was recorded in Sindh on Saturday morning. Rohri recorded the highest rainfall of 16 mm while Hyderabad Airport recorded the lowest rainfall of only 1 mm. Other districts and cities recorded either little or no rain.
Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Kashmore, Jacobabad, and Shikarpur are likely to accumulate water in low-lying areas, which has created a flood situation. Farmers were advised to “manage their activities keeping in view the weather forecast”, while authorities concerned were put on alert to deal with the emergency situation.
Meanwhile, an advisory from the Flood Forecasting Division warned of “many scattered moderate to heavy intensities” over Balochistan’s Zhob, Sibi, Kalat, and Makran divisions and Multan, Bahawalpur, and Dera Ghazi as well as Sindh. “Heavy and isolated very heavy rain”
It has also issued a medium to high flood warning in mountain streams of DG Khan division and Sibi, Nasirabad, Zhob, Kalat, Larkana, and Hyderabad divisions.
The PMD said the weather in Karachi will remain “mostly cloudy with rain/thundershower” on all three days with maximum temperatures ranging between 30-32 degrees Celsius during the three-day period.
