The chief justice of Bangladesh’s highest court said on Saturday that he had agreed to resign “in principle” following an ultimatum from protesters, broadcaster Jamuna TV reported.

Obaid-ul-Hasan, who was appointed to head the Supreme Court last year and is seen as loyal to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was called on by protesters outside the court in the capital Dhaka to resign.

Nobel laureate Mohammad Younis took charge of Bangladesh’s caretaker government on August 8, hoping to help the country recover from weeks of violence that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. And was forced to flee to neighboring India.

As the caretaker government’s chief adviser, Yunus, also known as the ‘banker of the poor’, has been tasked with restoring stability to the country, which has seen its worst violence in decades and then a new parliamentary government.

“The country has the potential to become a very beautiful nation,” Younis told reporters on his arrival in Dhaka after medical treatment in Paris after protesters backed him for a role in the caretaker government.
