Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territories: US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that a ceasefire deal in Gaza could prevent Iran from attacking Israel in retaliation for the killing of the Hamas leader, which has heightened regional tensions.
His remarks came after Iran rejected Western calls to “sustain” the threat of retaliation.
The Islamic Republic and its allies have accused Israel of killing Ismail Haniyeh during a visit to Tehran on July 31 to mark the swearing-in of Iranian President Masoud Pizshakyan. Israel had no comment.
Iran vowed to avenge the death, which came hours after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed a senior commander in Lebanon’s powerful Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.
