Hurricane Ernesto is moving away from Puerto Rico, where schools and offices were closed Wednesday after heavy rain and flooding hit the Caribbean island.
The weather system was moving north of Puerto Rico on Wednesday morning and is expected to reach Bermuda on Saturday.
Ernesto was expected to pass north of the U.S. mainland, but officials still expect widespread disruption, power outages, and heavy rain. The Puerto Rican government said there are only 344 shelters available and public transportation is suspended.
This is the third hurricane of this year’s hurricane season.
The National Hurricane Center said Wednesday that the storm had sustained winds of 75 mph. It warned that “significant” flooding is expected in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and the British Virgin Islands.
