Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and fled to India after massive protests.
According to the country’s army chief, an interim government will now be established.
Bangladesh has been gripped by protests since late July, which have left around 300 people dead.
Bangladesh’s government collapsed due to record unemployment and inflation, leaving nearly 800,000 graduates unemployed. Students protested the 30% job quota for liberal families, which led to the Supreme Court reducing it to 5%. Demonstrations resumed after students demanded an apology from Sheikh Hasina for suppressing the protests, which left more than 300 people dead. Hasina refused to apologize, calling the protesters ‘secret’ and ‘t*wrist’. The movement intensified, leading to Hasina’s resignation after 15 years in power, with images of protesters looting her home.
