 Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that Pakistan was trying to stay relevant through “terrorism” and “proxy wars” but its “nefarious plans” would never succeed.

The nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors have uneasy relations and India has accused Pakistan for decades of backing Islamist militants fighting its rule in Kashmir, a Himalayan region both claim entirely. are but only partially governed.

Pakistan denies the allegations, saying it only provides diplomatic and moral support to Kashmiris seeking self-determination in the Muslim-majority region.

Indian PM Narendra Modi’s comments came at an event to mark the 25th anniversary of India’s brief military conflict with Pakistan in the Himalayan region of Kargil. The arch-rivals have also fought three wars, two of which were over Kashmir.

Modi said that whenever Pakistan tried to advance its plans, it was humiliated but it had not learned anything from its history.

He said, “I want to tell these patrons of terrorism that their nefarious plans will never succeed, Our brave (forces) will crush terrorism, and the enemy will be given a befitting reply.”

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Indian Foreign Minister Subramanian Jaishankar said last month that India would seek a solution to cross-border terrorism that “cannot be a good neighbor policy.”
